Detroit Greeks celebrate independence with parade

The Greek community celebrated the Detroit Greek Independence Day on Sunday with its 14th annual parade down Monroe Street in Detroit.

The Greek Community of Metropolitan Detroit commemorates Greece's rise against the Ottoman Turks in 1821 after being held in slavery for 400 years.

Festivities Sunday included dance groups, marching bands and a few thousand spectators, said Joan DeRonne of the Detroit Greek Independence Day Committee.

Grand marshal was Philip Frangos, chair of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association.
